— Victor Jean Nicolle, Rome – the Roman Forum – View of the Arch of Septimius Severus (ca. 1787-1798?); in:
Private collection, Rome (2021).

The view depicts the Arch of Septimius Severus, raised by the emperor between 202 and 203 A.D., at the Roman Forum near the foot of the Capitoline Hill still partially buried.
Through the central archway in the background the Arch of Titus can be seen as it appeared before being restored by Giuseppe Valadier (1762-1839) in 1822, and on the right, the medieval portal by Vignola through which the Orti Farnesiani could be accessed. To the right of the Arch of Septimius Severus can be seen the Column of Phocus (Colonna di Foca) in front of some houses that today no longer exist, and in the background the church of Santa Maria Liberatrice, that was pulled down in 1900 to bring to light the ruins of Santa Maria Antiqua. The scene is animated by a host of figures going about their daily business, giving evidence of the bustling life around the Forum. This work can be dated back to Nicolle?s first trip to Italy between 1787 and 1798.
