The Archivio Storico Capitolino has the task to preserve, maintain and make available the documentation produced by the Municipality of Rome. It was set up on the Capitol between 1874 and 1898, and was moved to the present location of the Roman Oratory in 1922. The Archivio Storico Capitolino houses, together with ancient documents the maps that were produced by the Municipality over time, a number of family archives, the Roman Library, and the Roman Newspaper and Periodical Library. The Archivio Storico Capitolino is a center for the study of the history and culture of Rome from the Middle Ages to the present. It collaborates with Universities and other national and foreign cultural Institutions.

What is SMART
SMART is a showcase on the scientific cataloging work conducted systematically by the offices of the Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural Heritage on the cultural heritage of its competence.

Thematic itineraries introduce the visitor to the exploration of this vast heritage.

The publication of the scientific data collected in the SIMART cataloging and management system under the indications of the Catalog Service will take place gradually, both as a quantity of cards, and as a quantity of accompanying information. Precautions and ad hoc reworkings, and a modern web interface, aim to draw up the data that is easier to use both for specialists and for a wider audience. The updating of data, the publication of new cards and the uploading of new images takes place in real time between SIMART and the website.

The site navigation system integrates full text research through the entire published heritage (works of art, archaeological finds, monuments, villas and historical parks, scientific assets, demo-ethno-anthropological assets) with the application of dynamic filters on key fields. The detail sheet of the individual asset is accompanied by numerous links that refer to other related forms, or suggest additional search keys, or refer where relevant to the relative site of the “Museums in the City” [or the Museum Collections of the City of Rome].
